지난 2월 3일 느낌 좋은 뮤지컬 <새장 속의 광인들(La Cage aux Folles)>에서 “난 나야”를 외쳤던 여장 배우 더글라스(Douglas Hodge)를 남우주연상 후보에 올려놓으며 영국에서 가장 영예로운 무대예술상인 2009 로렌스 올리비에 상(Laurence Olivier awards) 경쟁이 시작되었고 독립 프로덕션으로는 가장 많은 7개 부문에 올라간 뮤지컬 새장 속의 광인들은 서덕(Southwark)의 비교적 작은 극장인 초컬릿팩토리(Menier Chocolate Factory)에서 출발해 웨스트엔드로 전입하였으며, 함께 열연한 상대배우 데니스(Denis Lawson)역시 남우주연상 후보에 올라 한 작품에서 경쟁하는 모습이 연출되었다.

그 외에도 로얄 세익스피어 컴퍼니(RSC)와 연극과 뮤지컬을 포함해 올 한 해에만 네 개의 작품을 선보인 제작사 돈마(Donmar)는 모두 13개 부문 후보에 올라 역시 강세를 보였으며, 작년 7월 선보인 뮤지컬 <조로(Zorro)>-2010년 말 서울 공연이 예정된- 역시 최우수 신작을 포함해 모두 5개 부문 후보에 올라 주목 받아왔다.

전반적으로 작년 한해도 영국은 셰익스피어가 강세였지만, 안타깝게도 올리비에상은 런던 공연만 적용하는 것을 원칙으로 해 후보작에서 주목 받지 못했으며, 특이한 점은 국립극장에서 첫 출발한 작품은 한 부문에서도 보이지 않았다는 것이다. 다만 뉴카슬에서 시작해 국립으로 내려온 광부들의 회화 수업을 그린 <광부 화가(The Pitmen Painters)>만이 최우수 희곡상 후보를 포함해 모두 네 개가 올라 있었으며, 최우수 엔터테인먼트 후보에 오랜만에 서커스(La Clique)가 등장했다는 점이다.

런던 극장협회(Society of London Theatre)가 주관하는 올해로 33주년을 맞이하는 올리비에 시상식은 세계 경제 위기 속에서도 2008년 새로운 매표 기록(다음 기사에 자세히 소개할 예정)을 세워서인지 비교적 활기찬 분위기에서 진행 되었으며, 3월 8일 일요일 성황리에 시상식을 마쳤고 아래 뮤지컬 부분의 수상작후보와 수상작을 간단히 소개한다.
